The Life of Artist Jackson Pollock
An American painter who was a leading exponent of Abstract Expressionism, an art movement individualised by the uninhibited gestures in paint generally termed “action painting.” In his lifetime he received vast criticism and serious recognition for the unconventional “poured” or “drip” technique he employed to create his unforgettable artworks. From his contemporaries, he was recognised for his exceptionally personal and completely uncompromising commitment to art. His works had enormous influence on his contemporaries and on numerous following art movements in America. He is also one of the first American painters to be acknowledged throughout his living years and after his passing as a peer of 20th-century European fathers of revolutionary art.
Early life and work
Paul Jackson Pollock was the fifth and youngest son of Stella May McClure and LeRoy Pollock, who were both of Scotch-Irish ancestry (LeRoy’s surname was McCoy prior to his adoption around 1890 by a family named Pollock) and he was born and raised in Iowa. The family left Cody, Wyoming, eleven months after Jackson’s birth; he would know Cody only in his family’s photographs. In the following sixteen years the family lived in California and Arizona, ultimately going on to move nine times. In 1928 his family moved to Los Angeles, where the young man enrolled at the Manual Arts High School. At the school he was educated by Frederick John de St. Vrain Schwankovsky, a painter and illustrator who was also a member of the Theosophical Society, a sect promoting metaphysical and occult spirituality. Schwankovsky taught Pollock some fundamental techniques in drawing and painting, introduced him to advanced concepts of European contemporary art, and encouraged his interest in theosophical works. At this same time, Pollock - raised an agnostic - attended the camp meetings of the original messiah of the theosophists, Jiddu Krishnamurti, as he was a personal friend of Schwankovsky. Those spiritual explorations allowed him to embrace the work of the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung and the exploitation of unconscious imagery in his art during subsequent years.
In the 1930 fall Pollock followed his brother Charles who in 1922 had decided to study art in New York City, where he enrolled at the Art Students League for his brother’s teacher, the regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton. (Jackson rejected his Christian name, Paul, around about the same time.) He studied life drawing, painting, and composition with Benton for the following two and a-half years, leaving in the early part of 1933. For the following two years Pollock lived in poverty, first off with Charles and, by the 1934 fall, with his brother Sanford. He shared an apartment in Greenwich Village with Sanford and his wife until 1942.
Pollock was employed by the WPA Federal Art Project in fall, 1935, as an easel painter. This employment allowed him financial security in the last years of the Great Depression as well as an opportunity to develop his art. From his study with Benton to 1938, Pollock’s work was highly impacted by the compositional methods and regionalist subject matter of his teacher and by the poetic expressionist vision of the American painter Albert Pinkham Ryder. It portrayed largely small landscapes and figurative scenes including Going West (1934–35), in which Pollock employed motifs inspired from pictures of his birthplace at Cody.
In 1937 Pollock began psychiatric treatment for alcoholism, and he suffered a nervous breakdown in 1938, which caused him to be institutionalized for about four months. After these experiences, his work became semiabstract and showed the assimilation of motifs from the modern Spanish artists Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró, as well as the Mexican muralist José Clemente Orozco. Jungian symbolism and the Surrealist exploration of the unconscious also influenced his works of this period; indeed, from 1939 through 1941 he was in treatment with two successive Jungian psychoanalysts who used Pollock’s own drawings in the therapy sessions.

What is Action painting?
Action painting is a direct, instinctive, and very dynamic sort of art that uses the impulsive application of speedy, extensive brushstrokes and the by-chance effects of dripping or spilling paint around the artwork. The name was labelled by the American art critic Harold Rosenberg to characterize the style by a group of American Abstract Expressionists (see Abstract Expressionism) who had been using the method since around 1950. Action painting is separate from the carefully preplanned paintings of the “abstract imagists” and “colour-field” painters, which consists of the other significant direction found in Abstract Expressionism and is parallelable to Action painting only in their shared absolute significance to unlimited personal expression free of any traditional aesthetic and/or social values.
The art of the Action painters Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Bradley Walker Tomlin, and Jack Tworkov reflect the influence of the “automatic” techniques that developed in Europe during the 1920s and ’30s by the Surrealists. While Surrealist automatism (q.v.), which involved scribblings recorded without the artist’s conscious control, was originally designed to reveal unconscious associations in the viewer, the automatic technique of the Action painters was rather conceived as a means by which to give the artist’s instinctive creative forces free reign and of revealing these forces directly to the viewer. In Action painting, the very act of painting itself being the time of the artist’s literal contact with his piece, was as important as the completed artwork.
It is well held that Jackson Pollock’s abstract drip paintings, executed from 1947, initiated the bolder, gestural techniques that characterized Action painting. The fast-paced brushstrokes of de Kooning’s “Woman” series, begun in the early 50s, successfully transgressed a richly emotive, expressive trend. Action painting went on to have major significance through the 1950s in Abstract Expressionism, with the most fundamental art movement occurring in the US. By the end of the decade, however, leadership of the movement had moved to the colour-field and abstract imagist painters, the followers of whom in the sixties rebelled against the unconventionality of the Action painters.
